Dales Divide Ultra - Would you?

Fresh Cutter Bryn Appleton recently took on the iconic ultra, the Dales Divide, and finished in 9th place, an achievement that speaks to both physical endurance and mental resilience. We asked Bryn to reflect on the experience, share what it takes to get through a race like this, as he looks ahead to his next big challenge, the Highland Trail 550.

The Dales Divide is widely regarded as one of the UK’s most iconic ultra-endurance challenges, an 600km self-supported route that demands not just physical strength, but serious mental resilience, problem-solving, and determination from start to finish.

To complete it is an insane achievement in itself. To race it at pace is something else entirely.

What makes this story even more impressive is that it was tackled by 20-year-old Fresh Cutter Bryn, who not only finished but secured an outstanding 9th place overall. Taking on a race of this scale at such a young age highlights both his natural talent and his rapidly growing experience in the world of ultra-distance riding.

Bryn is no stranger to big challenges either, he already holds the record as the youngest ever finisher of the Highland Trail 550, achieved last year, and is also the current U23 24-hour National Champion.

He is now preparing to take on the Highland Trail 550 once again this May, followed by the North Wales 400 later in the year, as part of his goal to complete the UK Triple Crown series.

A standout example of the next generation of riders stepping up, pushing boundaries, redefining endurance, and showing just what’s possible on two wheels.

First of all—9th place at the Dales Divide is an incredible result. How are you feeling now that it’s done?

Very happy now It’s done, that’s by far the longest push I’ve done in one go, was not expecting a top 10 finish so pretty stoked with that!

Look at them stats!?!?

What were your expectations going into the race, and did the reality match them?

It’s hard to know because I honestly came into it with no expectations. Just wanted to push myself and enjoy it, wasn’t too focused on the result until I found myself around the top 10 then expectations definitely started to shift.

Can you describe a standout moment from the ride that really stuck with you?

Making it to the bothy Saturday night after battling the gale force wind and rain of Storm Dave. Restrap were running their Rest and Raman hut so a roaring fire and noodles was an added bonus, was a core memory for sure.

What was the toughest point during the race, and how did you push through it?

Toughest point mentally and physically was probably the morning after the first night, everything felt empty including my legs!

I pushed through it by sleeping in a ditch for an hour, got a second wind after that and felt much better haha.

How did you manage sleep, nutrition, and pacing across such a long effort?

Having never ridden the route before it was hard to have any kind of strategy. Sleep wise, I managed to grab two 30 minute naps in the morning after night one, these were never planned but it felt right, also managed another hour in the bothy.

Nutrition consisted of eating as regularly as I could and trying to get decent food in, but that was near impossible with the corner shops that made up most of the resupply options.

What did this race teach you about yourself as a rider?

Taught me I can push myself considerably more than I’d previously thought possible!

Were there any mistakes or challenges that you’ll approach differently next time?

Pack spare brake pads, I went through a brand new set in the first day!

How important is mindset in ultra-distance racing compared to physical fitness?

Both play a huge part but mindset is so important especially in the night that’s the part I struggle with the most.

What kind of story do you hope to tell from this ride?

I hope to tell a story that inspires people to get outside and go on similar missions.

Is your Fresh Cuts experience so far changing how you think about storytelling on the bike?

Definitely, It’s changed the way I think of content as a whole. It can be hard to document events like this well but I’m happy with how things are progressing so far.

Next up is the Highland Trail 550, how are you feeling heading into that?

Nervous but excited for it, focused on a quick recovery now with it only being 3 weeks away.

You currently hold the record as the youngest finisher, does that add any pressure going back?

I’m still relatively new to this side of racing so just enjoying them as they come, anything result wise is a bonus!

How will your experience at the Dales Divide influence your approach to the HT550?

They’ll be some aspects I’ll take from Dales but overall it’s a longer effort with much harder terrain to cover, so slower pace and much more bike time!

What are your goals for the race this time around?

I’d be lying If I said I didn’t wanna go a decent amount quicker this time. I feel fitter on the bike and have gained a huge amount of experience since then so we’ll have to see!

What advice would you give to someone thinking about entering their first ultra-distance event?

I’d say start small work your way up, get a few bikepacking trips in beforehand to finalise your setup and be prepared. Ultras don’t tend to have any support in place should things go wrong so it’s up to you to get yourself out of that situation.

What keeps you motivated during the hardest moments out on the trail?

The thought of it all being finished. ( We loved this answer! )

Why do you think events like these are so special?

The people! The ultra community is the best.
