Help shape the future of mountain biking and communities across the Scottish Borders.
Scottish Cycling, through its department Developing Mountain Biking in Scotland (DMBinS), is looking to appoint a Scottish Borders Trail Co-ordinator to lead an exciting new community-focused programme across the Scottish Borders.
Funded by Scottish Ministers in conjunction with Scottish Borders Council, as the Lead Partner for the Local Action Group, this role will use mountain biking as a vehicle to inspire young people, strengthen communities, develop volunteers and create sustainable local trail networks.
This is an opportunity to make a genuine difference by working with schools, community groups, Trail Associations, volunteers and land managers to create lasting social, environmental and community benefits.
About Scottish Cycling and DMBinS
Scottish Cycling is the internationally recognised governing body for cycle sport in Scotland and is part of British Cycling.
Developing Mountain Biking in Scotland (DMBinS) leads the national development of mountain biking, working with communities, government, businesses, and volunteers to make Scotland one of the world's leading mountain biking destinations.
Across Scotland, we use mountain biking to improve health and wellbeing, support community development, create skills and employment opportunities, strengthen tourism and encourage more people to enjoy the outdoors.
About the Role
This new fixed-term post will work across the Scottish Borders, supporting communities to become active custodians of their local trail networks while creating new opportunities for young people to learn, volunteer and develop practical skills.
Working with schools, community organisations and volunteers, the successful candidate will deliver a programme that links education with community action—helping young people move from participation to leadership while supporting the long-term sustainability of local trails.
The role will combine community engagement, project management, partnership working and practical outdoor delivery, making every week different.
The Role Will Include
- Delivering extra-curricular trail development and maintenance programmes within secondary schools.
- Supporting teachers to develop the confidence and skills to continue programmes beyond the project.
- Working with young people to build confidence, leadership, teamwork and practical outdoor skills.
- Establishing and mentoring new Trail Associations in communities including Selkirk and Newcastleton.
- Supporting volunteers to organise and deliver trail maintenance sessions.
- Building positive relationships with land managers including Forestry and Land Scotland, community trusts and private estates.
- Supporting the delivery of DIRTT Volunteer Trail Dig Leader training.
- Supporting the implementation of sustainable trail management plans across the Tweed Valley.
- Developing partnerships with schools, community organisations, local authorities and outdoor recreation partners.
- Monitoring project outcomes and celebrating success through communications and community engagement.
Who We're Looking For
We're looking for someone who is passionate about people as much as mountain biking.
You'll enjoy bringing communities together, working with young people and volunteers, and building strong relationships that create lasting change.
You may have experience in community development, youth work, outdoor education, countryside management, volunteer management, trail development or project delivery. Equally important is your enthusiasm, initiative and ability to inspire others.
You'll be highly organised, self-motivated and equally comfortable facilitating a community meeting, delivering a school session or spending the day outdoors working alongside volunteers. Scottish Cycling/DMBinS is committed to selecting staff solely based on their ability to do the job for which they are being recruited and welcomes application from all sections of the community.
Why Join Us?
This is far more than a trail development role.
You'll help create new opportunities for young people, strengthen local communities, develop future volunteer leaders and leave a lasting legacy across the Scottish Borders.
