UK Trails Project to launch UK wide trail report at the Scottish Mountain Bike Conference this November
The UK Trails Project to publish first of its kind, in-depth investigation into the UK trails network at the Scottish Mountain Bike Conference this November. 'The Trail Report' will present the results of project manager, our Dave’s engagement with over 30 key stakeholders, alongside the results from over 2000 survey responses.
The UK Trails Project is suitably stoked to announce the launch of the results of its first year’s in-depth investigation into the UK trails network. Launching at the Scottish Mountain Bike Conference in November, The Trail Report will present the results of project manager Dave’s engagement with over 30 key stakeholders, and result from over 2000 survey responses.
These real-life stories paint a broad picture of mountain biking, explaining what and how the sport impacts and brings benefit to people’s lives in ways that often go undervalued.
Developed in partnership with Dr. Tom Campbell at Edinburgh Napier University, 'The Trail Report' will provide an evidence-based platform from which the UK Trail Project will launch ten work packages to provide practical assistance to the UK trails network, improving sustainability and creating a solid legacy for the next generation.
But the UK Trails Project has done much more than just research. By engaging and listening to the land management community, we discovered the wide range of pressures and legal constraints they must work within and an appreciation for people enjoying the countryside responsibly. Facing ever tightening budget, land mangers see value in partnership working at the range of levels, but need trust and support to make this possible.
Building that trust and open communication is the UK Trails Project’s greatest strength. By taking a listening and pragmatic approach, Dave has brought together parties which may not have spoken for several years. As it enters Phase 2, the project will work with several partners to build the frameworks required to make cooperation between riders and land managers easier, more structured and in some cases, possible for the first time.
The project will launch The Trail Report, at the Scottish MTB Conference to be held from the 7th to the 9th of November, at the Macdonald Cardrona Hotel in the Tweed Valley.

“SRAM partners with UK cycling and land management organisations to help create a sustainable future for mountain bike trails across the UK”
This new project, supported by an initial 3 year project manager post, has been created to support the mountain bike community, governing bodies, and land managers/owners to share knowledge, discuss issues and opportunities for greater collaboration, and improve the sustainability of the mountain bike trail network across the UK.
Scottish Cycling, through Developing Mountain Biking in Scotland (DMBinS), manages the post, and project, and is supported by a steering group including British Cycling, Cycling Ireland, Welsh Cycling, Forestry and Land Scotland, Forestry England, Natural Resources Wales, Outdoor Recreation Northern Ireland, along with the project funders, SRAM.
