Trail Therapy are Recruiting for Volunteers!

We'd love you to join our small team of super-dedicated and enthusiastic volunteers to further enable us to expand our Trail Therapy programme - using mountain biking to support those experiencing mental ill-health. Volunteers are now needed in the Dundee and Perth and Kinross areas!

TT Vols Comrie Croft 070821

Trail Therapy is our initiative that was piloted in the Tweed Valley in 2018 where we identified that mountain biking could work in a more proactive manner with our National Health Service. We weren’t seeing a lot of activity in this area and we were keen to progress a programme with research and evaluation built into it so we could study exactly how mountain biking could directly support good mental health.

In this small-scale pilot programme, our very own Graeme Mclean, Head of DMBinS and one very enthusiastic Occupational Therapist who also happened to be an ace mountain biker decided to combine their love of mountain biking with her job, where she supported those experiencing moderate to severe mental ill-health. The results were reviewed and analysed by Edinburgh Napier University and were very promising indeed! So started Trail Therapy!

MTB TT NHS Lanarkshire 01

Mental illness is not a personal failure!

Well, we aren't quite at the giant oak tree scale yet but with successful funding bids now enabling us to take Trail Therapy across Dundee, Lanarkshire and now into Perth and Kinross it is an exciting time indeed.

Massive thanks to our funders, Scottish Government Community Mental Health and Wellbeing Funds as distributed by Dundee Volunteer Voluntary Action and Perth and Kinross Association of Voluntary Service Ltd, Trek, NatureScot, and Scottish Cycling.

Importantly, we do not charge individuals for this programme, we want to make it as accessible as possible to those who could benefit from it. This means we need the support of dedicated volunteers to help us deliver our supported led rides.

We know that time is so very important for us all and so in appreciation of that we offer bespoke mentorship and financial support for our volunteers enabling them to gain relevant MTB Leadership Awards, Outdoor First Aid Qualifications, Child protection training, and Mental Health First Aid qualifications.
