T Co YT 2024

Take Care of Your Trails is an annual campaign, that we piloted here in Scotland in 2017 to encourage and promote volunteer based trail maintenance. The campaign highlights all trail repair, clean-up and build efforts from trail crews and volunteers across Europe.

It has grown considerably from 2018 when the concept was adopted by IMBA Europe, to last years phenomenal statistics, where almost 7500 volunteer hours were reported by approximately 1560 volunteers who took part in one of the total of 75 actions spread over 19 countries!

This year the theme is 'Trail building education. In 2024 IMBA Europe would like to make sure the crews that take part have access to trail building and maintenance education, and is offering series of four online trail building and basic maintenance classes.

These webinars are being recorded and shared on the IMBA Europe YouTube channel, Where they guide (future) trail crew leaders and volunteer groups through the basic principles of organising and hosting a trail maintenance event, from getting permission and how to recruit volunteers and make it fun to a session with experienced trail builders that explain the basic trail building & maintenance techniques.

The first of these features our very own Fee!

The IMBA Europe website has a lot of helpful advice and tips to help you have the best dig session. With downloadable content to allow you to promote your did days and recruit volunteers.

Complete the required details and your session will appear on the IMBA map. Lets get those dig sessions, registered and get them flags populating Scotland!

Since the inauguration of the Take Care of Your Trails campaign in 2017, IMBA Europe has been trying to highlight and reward the outstanding efforts of trail crews/associations and their dedicated volunteers across Europe. There are four awards this year:

  • The 'Outstanding trail crew' award recognises the crew who log the most hours of work and gather the most amount of volunteers. This crew organises regular trail maintenance days throughout the course of the year, and communicates and engages well with their local community.
  • The 'Protect and Preserve award' is awarded based on the best community led conservation effort or proposal from a trail association.
  • The 'Trail advocate of the year' and 'Youth trail advocate of the year' awards reward individuals who go above and beyond for their local trails and association. This award is given to 3 individuals (a man, a woman, a youth) who have distinguished themselves in hours and service to trail maintenance during the past year.
  • The 'Best National Mountain Bike Association' award emphasises the importance of national trail associations and their created impact on their communities and trail networks. This will be recognised as a lifetime achievement.
