Capercaillie Emergency

The Cairngorms National Park, the last remaining stronghold for capercaillie in the UK and disturbance is pushing them closer to extinction. It is a criminal offence to disturb the birds when they are breeding. This spring, the lek is vitally important.

As mountain bikers we can inadvertently stray into areas where the birds may be nesting. If you are visiting the Cairngorms from April to August, please pay heed to signage developed by Badenoch & Strathspey Trail Association, Cairngorms Capercaillie Project and the Cairngorms National Park Authority alerting you that Caper are around, and follow the guidance.

• Stay on the Trail (and stay quiet)
• Enjoy the flow! Avoid stopping.
• Keep your dog on the trail.
• Avoid riding these areas at dawn or dusk.

By following the advice on the signs over the coming months we can help give our Capercaillie the best chance at a successful breeding season.
