Dumfries and Galloway - Home to 5 of the 7Stanes

The 7stanes are world-class mountain biking centres that span the south of Scotland. Ae, Dalbeattie, Glentrool, Glentress and Innerleithen, Kirroughtree, Mabie and Newcastleton.

Their award-winning trails offer some of the best mountain biking in the country and attract riders from across the UK and beyond, with riders keen to tick off each 'Stane' and get that insta image!

7stanes is more than just a name. 'Stane' is the Scots word for stone (just for folks reading not from Scotland) and at each of the 7stanes locations, you'll find a stone sculpture reflecting a local myth or legend.The stanes are found in prominent locations on the trails in the forests. They’re accessible on foot or by horse as well as by bike, and range in size from one to three metres high and from two to six tons in weight!

Forestry and Land Scotland (FLS) is gathering views and ideas to help make the most of an ambitious £Multi-million project to rejuvenate the 7stanes product and its wider cycling and visitor offer to re-establish it back in the European top ten of must-visit destinations.

FLS is looking to secure £5 million of funding from the Borderlands Inclusive Growth Deal that will fund work at some sites that will showcase the incredible potential of the full 7stanes vision and hopefully attract wider further investment.

Built with so much love by the Scottish mountain biking legend, Rik Alsop, the trails of Drumlanrig were crafted to give you some of the best flow, tech, and fun - rivaling any trail(s) in Scotland.

Unfortunately, the trails of Drumlanrig took a massive hit from Storm Arwen and the subsequent storms, and at the moment (26th May 2022) the trail network remains closed.

Set in the grounds of the stunning Drumlanrig Castle, the Dumfriesshire seat of the Duke and Duchess of Buccleuch and Queensberry, there are loads of other activities, walking trails, and a cafe making it an amazing day for everyone in your group/family.

If you are in the area, stop by and give Rik some support. Rik not only builds the trails, but he also runs Rik's Bike Shed - the onsite bike shop which has all your usual bike shop gear and a selection of hire bikes. There is also a bike wash, showers, and cafe at the trailhead.
